1Blk 69 Bedok South Ave 3
Roast Duck and Roast Pork
Located at Blk 69 Bedok South Ave 3, Singapore, this little coffee shop stall offers great food at affordable price. They are famous for their wood fired roast duck and roast pork. In addition, their traditional soups are offers great value and pair well with the meat dishes. Freshly prepared daily, the duck, char siew and roast pork are must haves during festive seasons. I personally witness the long queue on Chinese New Year's eve waiting to collect their orders placed weeks before. The nearest train stop is currently the Bayshore MRT station. It will be more convenient when the Bedok South MRT is operational in late 2026.
2No Name Cheng Tng
Traditional Asian Desserts
At the other end of the coffee shop where Ah Siong is located, you can find a No Name dessert shop. This humble shop stared as a store in one of the coffee shops at the same block. It's Cheng Tng, in my opinion, is one of the best in Singapore, something I will take if I am running a fever. My mom said it is good for soothing heat in the body. In addition to this sugary soup base dessert, No Name also serves Tao Suan, Bubur Terigu and Bubur Hitam. These usually sell out in early evening, so go early if you wanna try them.
3Soy Eu Tua Coffee Shop
Fish ball noodles
Located at Jalan Tua Kong along Upper East Coast road, Soy Eu Tua coffee shop is a local favourite when it comes to good hawker food. Not to be missed is the Ah Lim Mee Pok, a traditional fish ball and minced meet noodle in vinegar, soy sauce and chilli oil. True to Teow Chew tradition, the pork lard is what I think make the dish very yummy. I remember my first time eating at this stall in the late 1980s. The wait is always at least 30 mins. Not that they are slow. It is just that the queue didn't seem to stop. Ah Lim has a few other stalls available in other parts of Singapore now. But somehow, the taste of the succulent noodle is still the best at this stall.
4Royal Cafe
Mee Siam
Literally a stone throw away from Ah Lim Mee Pok, Royal Cafe is situated along Upper East Coast Road near the Jalan Tua Kong junction. The name Royal Cafe is misleading. One would have thought this is a gourmet coffee joint. Instead, Royal Cafe is famous for its Mee Siam. Mee Siam translates to "Siamese noodles" in Malay. It is a popular and historic noodle dish found across Singapore and Malaysia. Despite its name, it is not a traditional dish from Thailand (formerly Siam). Instead, it is a unique creation born from cultural fusion, heavily shaped by Peranakan (Nyonya) and Malay culinary traditions. The dish consists of thin rice vermicelli (bee hoon) served in a light, vibrant broth, balancing four distinct flavor profiles: sour, sweet, spicy, and savory. You tell me. Should you visit, is the Mee Siam here fit for the Royals?
